Your email provider provides this. If you have a UVa email account, you can quickly configure your email program to "authenticate" before you send any email directly through their server. This is really helpful, especially with notebooks because this way your PC configuration does not change on grounds, in your apartment or when you visit home on break.
To configure your PC for SMTP Authentication, simply visit UVa's page that tell you all about how to do that:
http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/email/smtpauth/
UVa also provides webmail at:
https://netbadge.virginia.edu/ If your email provider is not UVa, you should contact them to find out how to send through their SMTP (SMTP-Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, the same as "sending email") server.
