Got wireless?

If you have a personal router and are connecting it to our network, wait! Please visit the appropriate section for a "how-to" first! Incorrectly configured or connected routers are one of the top reasons your connection gets suspended.

Going somewhere?

When going on break, please take a minute to look over the "best practices" of what to do when leaving on break .

Need help?

It's always a good idea to have this checklist handy. Over 90% of the calls we get from folks who can't access the internet are "self solved" here.

User Server Policy

Web Site, Domain Name Services, Newsgroup, FTP and Mail Hosting is not allowed and is blocked unless you have a commercial account with us. We do not allow PC's to host any sort of service without a commercial hosting agreement. We limit what protocols can be allowed to run a "hosts" on the network, and it does not matter what port that resides on. Failure to adhere to this policy may result in having your connection turned off administratively until you comply.

 Multiple Computers Policy

We only allow one computer per bedroom/outlet. If you have more than one computer your service may be remotely turned off until you adhere to this policy. We have negotiated with building management for a specified number of users based upon the number of bedrooms. Ethernet splitters ARE NOT allowed, as these devices cause numerous errors on the network and are essentially hubs. Hubs, switches, splitters, and wireless access points are not allowed unless they sit behind your own personal router. If you need to connect more than one computer per bedroom, we suggest (and do not mind) if you use a Cable/DSL router which are available at the bookstore and many local office supply stores. To our network, a personal router appears that it is a single device, does not cause errors, and allows us to continue providing uninterrupted service and support to you.

Personal Router Policy

Be advised that any personal router not properly secured (wireless encryption enabled)  will be banned from the network. Banned users get this web page when trying to browse the internet. Securing a router is easy, a how-to guide is provided here .

Abnormal PC Activity

Be advised that any PC operating outside of normal guidelines (i.e. abnormally large packet sizes, etc.) or has a complaint lodged against it for improper activity of any kind, might be administratively disabled from accessing the Internet for cause. This will remain the case until the person(s) responsible for that system rectify the situation to our satisfaction.

Newsflash

UVa Targeted by RIAA

As reported by the Daily Progress (full article here ), seven users on the UVa network have been targeted by the RIAA for illegal music download files.

The University of Virginia tracks which user uses each IP address at any given time (just like we do). As a result, they are able to forward these warnings on to the actual user(s) that downloaded the files.  If the users do not "settle", they may find themselves the targetof a lawsuit.

We ask that if you have not actually "bought" a song or movie, that you not download it so we don't have to forward these same letters on to you.
