If your building has Ethernet service provided by Cavalier Broadband as part of your rent through your landlord, you should have no problems using a VOIP (Voice Oover Internet Protocol) Provider with our service.

There are several ways to make this happen of course.

  1. Plug in the adapter from your VOIP provider directly to our connection and plug your PC into the appliance from your VOIP provider.
  2. Use a router approved by your VOIP provider (Linksys, Netgear, Belkin and other manufacturers make them). You can usually buy these locally (like at Staples downtown) and connect the router's WAN port to our connection, then plug your PC/TiVO/Playstation into the router (or use the wireless connection afforded by your router to your PC, etc.).
  3. Use a software provided by your VOIP provider to make/receive calls. You will have to have a speaker/microphone (or headset) and have to have your computer booted up with the software running in order to use this method.

Realize the quality is not going to be the same as with a regular telephone line, and the quality of service we might afford is not guaranteed when it leaves our network and is on the Internet.

UVa Targeted by RIAA

As reported by the Daily Progress (full article here ), seven users on the UVa network have been targeted by the RIAA for illegal music download files.

 The University of Virginia tracks which user uses each IP address at any given time (just like we do). As a result, they are able to forward these warnings on to the actual user(s) that downloaded the files.  If the users do not "settle", they may find themselves the targetof a lawsuit.

 We ask that if you have not actually "bought" a song or movie, that you not download it so we don't have to forward these same letters on to you.
