Got wireless?

If you have a personal router and are connecting it to our network, wait! Please visit the appropriate section for a "how-to" first! Incorrectly configured or connected routers are one of the top reasons your connection gets suspended.

Going somewhere?

When going on break, please take a minute to look over the "best practices" of what to do when leaving on break .

Need help?

It's always a good idea to have this checklist handy. Over 90% of the calls we get from folks who can't access the internet are "self solved" here.

Personal routers are supported.

It is VERY important, whether you use wired or wireless routers, that you follow your manufacturers instructions on how to secure the device. Always change the default password. We also recommend that if you use a wireless router, enable MAC Address filtering to disable other folks in your area from connecting to your wireless connection and using your Internet.

While we support routers connecting to our network, it is not our responsibility to configure them, secure them or diagnose/troubleshoot them. If your router stops working, we'll make sure your PC can plug directly into the outlet and work.  Once you plug a router or related item into your outlet, you are creating your own network, and we are not responsible for helping you maintain your own network.

The majority of calls we receive from people with routers who are having issues are asked to do the following things. It's a great idea to try these things before you call us, it will help everyone.

  • Make sure the router is connected properly. The cable that goes from the network wall outlet plugs into the router WAN or Internet port on the router. Plugging it into any other outlet will not only cause errors on our network, but force our system to shut off your Internet connection until we discuss with you how to make a proper connection.
  • Please reboot your router (unplug the power and then plug it back in). This clears up a lot of problems. Remember, they are only 50.00 - 100.00 devices here, they are not flawless.
  • Login to the router (see your users manual, please make sure your password is not the default), check to see if your router has a WAN IP Address from us. If it does, our network is working  properly.
  • If your router has wireless capabilites, check to see how many PC's are connected through your router. If you have two PC's and there are more than two PC's using it (look at your routers DHCP page to see how many devices are showing up there), you probably need to secure your device.  We suggest using MAC Address filtering for any wireless routers, please check your routers instructions on how to do that.
  • If you plug your PC into your router and you get a message that you have limited or no Internet connectivity, try another outlet on your router (not the WAN or Internet port). If that does not work, you should reset the router back to factory defaults (see your manual). If that does not work, something (either your cable, network card or driver, or your router) is faulty.

UVa Targeted by RIAA

As reported by the Daily Progress (full article here ), seven users on the UVa network have been targeted by the RIAA for illegal music download files.

The University of Virginia tracks which user uses each IP address at any given time (just like we do). As a result, they are able to forward these warnings on to the actual user(s) that downloaded the files.  If the users do not "settle", they may find themselves the targetof a lawsuit.

We ask that if you have not actually "bought" a song or movie, that you not download it so we don't have to forward these same letters on to you.
